In this essay, based on the idea of “Brazilian social landscape”, coined by Gilberto Freyre, and the concept of “helplessness” present in the work Sigmund Freud, the authors develop some socio-psychoanalytical interpretations referring to contemporary Brazilian society. As this is an essay, some interpretative speculations are made regarding the social formation of Brazil and the “way of being Brazilian”, as well as the mechanisms and social arrangements that over the decades have been established in / by society and / by the Brazilian psyche, leading to the civilization of contrasts.
