Abstract

Introduction: In December 2019, in China, the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) emerged, causing the Covid-19 pandemic, and since then, a worrying health crisis has plagued the world. The decreed pandemic demanded a quick and efficient response from the government to the spread of the disease, in order to avoid illness in its most serious form and, consequently, many deaths. Objective: To analyze the official speeches given by the ex-president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, during the confrontation of Covid-19 in the country. Method: 13 speeches were identified, which were analyzed using the Content Analysis method as a basis. The data were organized into 4 empirical categories. Results: The ex-president discouraged the adoption of sanitary measures necessary to face the pandemic; prioritized the economy over health; minimized the impact of the disease and advocated a return to a state of normality; criticized the performance of other government entities and took no responsibility for the negative effects of the pandemic; as well as promoting the use of drugs without proven efficacy. Conclusion: During one of the biggest health crises ever faced by the country, the life and health of the people were not a priority.
