Abstract

The text makes a brief history of the expansion of Brazilian public higher education and the policies of student support and retention adopted in the last decade at federal universities. It also brings some findings and learning about student retention from research carried out in the period, several of them produced by researchers from LEPES - Laboratory of Studies and Research in Higher Education, UFRJ. The text points out that there have been many advances in the understanding of these policies, emphasizing knowledge about the different dimensions involved in student retention, not limited to financial support. It also points out that it is still necessary to deepen knowledge about specific actions, students' demands, the role of student collectives in retention and emerging themes such as mental health, facing institutional racism, combination of different actions and connection between student retention and the trajectory of quota students.
