O caráter nacional brasileiro no século XX

RESUMO Interpretado tanto pelos que o observam de fora como pelos que o vêem de dentro, o caráter nacional brasileiro parece caracterizar-se pelo equilíbrio de uma grande variedade de antagonismos: entre o litoral e o interior, o idealismo e o realismo, o moderno e o tradicional, o misticismo e o sensualismo, o apolíneo e o dionisíaco. Para Euclydes da Cunha, que foi um dos observadores de dentro, a força da cultura brasileira vinha muito mais do interior do que do litoral. James Bryce destaca-se entre os viajantes estrangeiros que procuraram interpretar o ethos brasileiro com a perspectiva de fora. Contrastando a pressa dos norte-americanos com a lentidão dos brasileiros, o historiador e cientista político britânico tocou num ponto importante do caráter nacional brasileiro, que para alguns de nós pode ser caracterizado pelo sentido ibérico do tempo: sentido pré-industrial e pré-cronornétrico. Note-se, entretanto, que o caráter nacional de qualquer povo não é estático, mas modifica-se de uma época para outra. O brasileiro de hoje parece mais consciente da necessidade de con¬ciliar sua forte tradição artística e literária com as modernas exigências do desenvolvimento científico e tecnológico. The Brazilian national character being interpreted both by the ones who observe it from outside and by the ones who see it from inside, seems to be characterized by the equilibrium of a great variety of antagonisms: between the coast and the interland, the idealism and the realism, the modern and the traditional, the misticism and the sensualism, the “apolineo” (characterized by beauty, moderation and sobriety) and the dionysiacal thought. Euclides da Cunha who was one of the observers of the subject said that the strength of the Brazilian culture came much more from the interland than from the coast. James Bryce is detached among the foreigner travellers who tried to interpret the Brazilian ethos with the perspective from outside. The British political Historer and Scientist James Bryce confronting the North-American hurry and the Brazilian slowness emphasized one aspect of the national character which can be characterized for some of us by the Iberian sense of time: pre-industrial and pre-chronometrical sense. However it can be observed, that the national character of any people is not a statical one, but is modified from a period of time to another one. The Brazilian of nowadays seems to be more conscious of the need of conciliating its strong artistical and literary tradition with the modern requirements of the technological and scientific development. D’après Euclides da Cunha, qui a été un des observateurs de l’intérieur, la force de la culture brésilienne venait beaucoup plus de l’intérieur que du littoral. James Bryce se détache parmi les voyageurs étrangers qui ont essayé d’interpréter l’éthos brésilien avec la perspective de dehors. Faisant contraster la vitesse des nord-americains avec la lenteur des brésiliens, l’historien et scientiste politique britannique touche un point important du caractère national brésilien qui peut être caractérisé par le sens ibérique du temps; le sens pré-industriel et pré-chronométrique. Il faut remarquer toutefois, que le caractère national d’un peuple n’est pas statique, mais il change d’une époque à l’autre. Le brésilien d’aujourd’hui semble plus conscient de la nécessité de concilier sa forte tradition artistique et littéraire avec les modernes exigences du développement scientifique et technologique.
