RESUMO

Este texto contempla a situação do crescimento da população urbana brasileira e suas novas formas de reorganização espacial. Busca-se acompanhar a evolução da população urbana no país desde os anos 1940 até 2010, destacando para o período 1970-2010 a configuração do crescimento metropolitano. O atual processo de urbanização apresenta especificidades regionais, contribuindo para que os aglomerados urbanos, quer sejam de caráter metropolitano ou não metropolitano, conformem-se, expandam-se e se consolidem. Nesse contexto, as migrações passam a ter papel fundamental. Nesse cenário, as antigas regiões metropolitanas continuam como as maiores concentrações socioespaciais e urbanas do país, distinguindo-se dos aglomerados metropolitanos recentes, bem como dos aglomerados urbanos não-metropolitanos.

ABSTRACT

This paper refers to the situation of the growth of urban population and its new forms of spatial reorganization. Seeks to follow the evolution of the urban population in the country since the 1940s until 2010, highlighting for the period 1970-2010 the configuration of metropolitan growth. The current process of urbanization presents regional specificities, thus contributing to the urban areas, whether in metropolitan or non-metropolitan character, to conform, to expand and consolidate. In this context, migration now has a key role. In this scenario, the old metropolitan areas continue as the largest urban concentrations, distinguishing metropolitan agglomerates of recent as well as the non-metropolitan urban areas.
