Mitologia. Natureza. Natureza selvagem. Neopaganismo. ABSTRACT v. 32, n. 1, p. 17-32, jan/jun., 2008. O homem verde or "the green man": so is called any sculpture, drawing or another representation of a face surrounded by or made of leaves. There are representations of "the green man" in Europe's cathedrals, particularly in England and other places in Wales and Scotland. There are "green men" in Germany, France, Italy and Flolland as well. Linked to the artisans who worked in the construction of medieval churches and cathedrals, "the green man" seems to feel uncomfortable inside churches and in the trame of Judaic-Christian symbolism. It is due, among other reasons, to their clear links to pre-Christian divinities, mostly associated to wild nature, animals, plants as well as to human beings' and land's fertility (Freyr, Dioniso, Cernunnos). In this article, such as hunters do, we shall follow "the green man's" trace since its pre-Christian manifestations until the resurgence of its symbolism in current days. KEYWORDS: Mythology. Nature. Nco-paganism. "Green Man".
